From Sunday to Monday…..

I often find myself sitting in Church and clinging to a nugget of scripture, music or teaching that I commit to carrying through my week.

The kind of moment when it seems like just what my heart and soul needs….

The words that I am sure I won’t forget…

And then I get home to journal or reflect and I can’t remember them.

Am I the only one who has that I wonder?

And so tonight I share with you one of my favorite benedictions.

benediction

As you leave this place

may the Living Lord go with you;

May he go behind you, to encourage you,
beside you, to befriend you,
above you, to watch over you,
beneath you, to lift you from your sorrows,
within you, to give you the gifts of faith, hope, and love,
and always before you, to show you the way.

I will read these words every morning and remember they are words that I carry from Sunday into Monday!

Priceless Moments….

One main reason I blog is to leave the stories of my family’s journey  with my nieces and nephews for them and their families and the generations to come. I found a nifty blog to book website and print them every once in a while. It is amazing to look back and see the threads and themes that have woven through our family tapestry.

Tonight I had such a sweet conversation with my four and a half-year old niece that I want to record it. Over the years I have had many conversations about bring single with all of the kids at different times. I have always been blessed by their full embrace and total acceptance of my singleness. This picture will show you just how lucky I feel as an aunt who has always been single. I may not have ever birthed children, but I am so fortunate to be surrounded by family who allow me to love them like they are my own!

When this picture came out, I enclosed this caption: I am often asked how I feel about being single. All I can say is with this group of kids in my life over the last 19 years and with their parents who fully embrace me, I am one very content woman! Love every one of them and so proud of how they are growing up!

me and my kiddo'sAnd so tonight was the first of the Aunt Trish are you married conversations with Johanna, age four and a half. She said she didn’t think I was since I don’t have any children. She wondered what I would do if I wanted to marry a man and he didn’t want to marry me. I told her that would be quite a tricky spot. She said, “Aunt Trish, you are the most beautiful lady ever. Please never get married.”  Tonight was full of sweet and innocent moments with a little girl and her very early impressions of how relationships unfold. I posted this picture and quote and want to secure it for the archives. So that someday Johanna will share the story with her kids and grand kids about a cold winter night when she was four and a half at Aunt Trish’s house and this conversation unfolded:

IMG_0795Johanna, age four and a half was telling me tonight that I have to see if a man is wearing a ring to find out if I can marry him. She told me she sees Papa (my Dad) put his ring on when she sleeps there. So, Aunt Trish, you can’t marry Papa cause he is married.

What would I do without her. I might have married my father!

I love you Johanna, your kind words, your developing mind and your big heart. I am so thankful God has allowed me to be your Aunt!

Living with intention…

Living with intention, a commitment for 2014!

Today is the day

It starts with thoughts of daily exercise, commitment to my morning devotions, meal prep and planning for breakfast, lunch and dinner and on my thoughts go with all the goodness that 2014 will hold….

I feel committed, longing and hopeful as I begin to outline what implementation looks like.

I begin to envision how nice my days will be when I get to the gym, workout, eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, have down time at home and remain true to my family and friends in relationship. I desire to offer myself fully to those I love and to things that make a difference. I long to live honestly and authentically……

And then I begin to feel the inner angst…

I bet it won’t work again..,I bet my thoughts are just fantasy…I bet i won’t be able to stay focused enough….

And as the negative energy fills my thoughts, I feel my commitment, longings and hope begin to fade…

And I realize that living with intention requires me to intentionally stop the negative thoughts and hang onto the vision I hold for my body, mind and spirit.

I realize living with intention requires me to embrace the invitation to go again as many times as I need to.

I realize living with intention requires me to focus on the next steps to take, not the next mountain to climb.

I realize that living with intention is about taking my thoughts captive and making choices in each moment that are aligned with my values and vision.

I wonder what it looks like for you to live with intention. Not where you hope to end up, but what will it require from you to live each day with intention that is aligned with your values and vision?

I invite you to dare to dream….

I dare you to live with intention…

I decided today that there is no other way for 2014!

Inspiration story….

inspiration

I am a bit of an inspiration junkie….

I love quotes and words…

I love stories and I love people….

And so on this second day of January, I being to wonder what or who will inspire me in 2014?

I want to blog regularly about stories of inspiration.

People who live ordinary lives and yet invite us to consider something new.

IMG_0845When I thought of inspiring I thought of this very honest girl who wrote the following words. She is just days away from her 17th birthday. She is a deep thinker and she has experienced great joy and deep sorrow. Olivia Grace, you are an inspiration and I thank God for you!

Grief is a difficult journey and yet it grows us all in our faith. I do not have words for how proud I am of Olivia in how she walks this journey. Just a few days before her 16th birthday her Dad died in a car accident. She has struggled deeply in this last year and is even more assured that Christ is her anchor. I love you livi lou!♥

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephesians 6:1

Family_11I’m so thankful to have had such a man to call my dad. He was a sweet mess, consistently cried at family gatherings just because he loved us all together so much. He taught me the importance of family and loyalty, of devoting your life to Christ and of seeing the adventure in mishaps like burnt dinner or a flat tire on the side of the highway. I was a shy kid and every morning he would tell me “get in trouble today”. It was his first instinct to go against the grain of society. He taught us to be bold and stick together as siblings, he taught us table manners and the importance of education. He taught me that it’s okay to cry but he also taught me to be “tougher than a bag of nails”. I love my daddy so much. I’m so so so thankful for our almost 16 years together. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better childhood.

Len & LivAnd so, this almost 17-year-old beautiful girl, strong athlete, oldest sibling and grieving teen offers us these words of inspiration. I wonder how these words of invitation and inspiration apply to where you are today?

Traditions

I have been thinking alot about traditions…

I am aware in my reflection on this past year how grateful I am for tradition.

In a year where grief attached itself to our beings, our traditions continued and brought comfort and familiarity.

During 2012 we also started some new traditions.

IMG_3752 IMG_3836 We had our first annual Peter Borgdorff golf invitational. It was a time of being together as a family and honoring my Dad. He has given lots and left a great impact in the Church, but his love for golf is a family tradition. And so, we found a way to get us all out on a summer Saturday and fun was had by all. We are looking forward to next years event!

We began the family tradition of a memory meal on the 23rd of December, the day Len died. It was a time of being together, sharing space and time in remembering and sending Chinese lanterns up in his honor. It was hard to know how it would be that evening, remembering one IMG_0929year ago, but Jean Marc, Len’s 10-year-old son, asked if we could do this every year. And so, a new tradition has been set. Same day each year, we will have a memory meal!

Nichols lake will always be a favorite and our family vacations began there many many years ago. Each time we gather as a family, Nichols Lake memories are shared, celebrated and enjoyed. Every Christmas we remark how the tradition of a family vacation has created friendships among cousins that has allowed them to enjoy each other in capture the flag and nerf wars but also stand arms linked in the pit of grief supporting and loving one another. 073

Last night my family ushered in the new year, as we have every year. Our evening began with conversation and games and as midnight draws near, we gather and read Psalm 90. And then we ended 2013 in prayer. As the year ends, we watch the ball drop and wish each a happy new year, with a hug. There were tears in my eyes as I envisioned a year starting a new. My heart carries my story and a new hope into 2014…I carry the last words of Psalm 90, words I have heard year after year and yet, this year, I embrace these words with great hope. May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.

It is my hope and prayer that if you are reading this, you will be blessed with an abundance of what you need in 2014 to live at peace in your heart and offering your kindness, words and love in a generous fashion to offer others hope!

Psalm 90

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place
throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

3 You turn people back to dust,
saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”
4 A thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.
5 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered.

7 We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan.
10 Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
12 Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13 Relent, Lord! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.

17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.
