Saluting my hero’s…

This year my perspective on Veterans Day feels is different. I can honestly say that my travels to South Africa this summer allotted me incredible insight to what it means to live in a free land. The power of Apartheid was prevalent and listening to first hand accounts was powerful and surreal. To have never lived in such oppression made me realize how fortunate I am.

I have great respect for my brothers and the many others who have served in our Armed Forces. I have seen the camaraderie of those who serve together. I have watched the vigorous and brutal training that prepares one physically for war. I have listened to the heartache of those in training  that accompanies the emotional and mental torment that comes from giving your entire being to something you believe in. I have wept as I have seen others say good-bye to those we call soldiers and they call sons and daughters. I have witnessed the cost to families when their husbands and fathers are absent for long periods of time. I have seen the celebration of victories of all sizes! I don’t know that I can imagine the depth of the valleys or the incredible mountain tops that  those who serve our country experience. I do know that my admiration and appreciation grows with every day older I get. There is a great cost to my freedom and I never want to lose sight of that. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have or continue to serve for our freedom!

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

EXCELLENCE

Who you are will show in what you do….

These words are on the wall at Visiting Angels Conference Room. I see it every morning when I walk into the office and I am reminded that every day, my work will speak to my character. I will have many opportunities with in the day to act professionally as a Director, Business Owner and Social Worker but I want all of those professional actions to be interwoven with the heart of a compassionate, strong, tender Christian woman.

This is not always an easy balance to find. I have moments when I struggle with what interwoven may look like, but I am pleased to say, it comes more naturally now than it used to. Is it because I have parents who modeled this well for me, or perhaps because I have been well-educated at Holland Christian, Calvin College and WMU MSW program? Is it because I learned about ministry while on staff at Sunshine Community Church, about advocacy while facilitating international adoptions, quality of life while working for Hospice or how to grow and manage a business that is all about professional boundaries and deep endless compassion. I want to say, it is all of those things and more. It is the big and little pieces in my story. It is about the journey of recognizing I am a woman of dignity and depravity. It is about the path that God has led me on and how He has gifted my being, It is about all the many wonderful mentors and friends who have helped me to grow up and mature and to learn how to love people well.

I hope and pray every day that who I am will show in what I do and as a result, that God will be Glorified!

home again….

I believe it is good to be gone but great to be home. I love coming home! I enjoy the familiarity, the comforts, the routine, the great people I work with and interact with every day. I am not a person who longs for vacation and finds home boring. I am very blessed to be someone who enjoys going away but loves coming home!

But home feels a bit different this time around. I am awaiting an email from Leif, my Fitness North Trainer with my nutritional plan. Remember a few weeks back O’Neal had said a vision without a plan is an illusion. Well folks, the vision of the woman I want to be physically is no longer an illusion. It is in process and I am becoming…

How do I feel about that? I signed my email to Leif with the following words….I am ready and waiting….hopeful and thankful…anxious but trusting! The plan will require me to stay on task, sacrifice some things I enjoy and work hard, but as I was reminded often at Fitness North, that is all temporary. The end result will free me to live a healthier, more active, longer life (unless of course, God has a different plan).

And so today I realized that while I was at Fitness North I did just what I was told, I exercised hard, prepared the food, ate what I was told when I was told, slept great and lived in a single focused community. It was a wonderful experience and I was very obedient. When I stepped off that plane, I know I need to transition from obedient to discerning. Now that I am home, it is now time for me to make choices that support my vision. It is a journey. At times it feels like a journey up a mountain and other times a coasting down a hill….but either way, I must keep my destination in mind and ensure that my mind is focused on where I want to be, for the long-term, not in this moment of pleasure or satisfaction.

My journey continues and I welcome your support, encouragement and prayers. I will be updating with a loss report every two weeks so you can celebrate with me as I live out my vision!

The results are in….

And I am very satisfied. My body responded well to the workouts and nutrition here at Fitness North. I lost 9 pounds the first week and 9.4 the second week. In addition I lost a combined total of 13 inches between my thighs, hips, waist and chest. I am encouraged to be going home with a plan which includes exercise and a nutrition plan. I will keep you posted on the peaks and valleys that likely will continue as I journey this road.

And so tonight we spent the evening together, enjoying a meal, karaoke, laughter, dancing, singing and celebration. Celebration of new friendships, individual and group accomplishments, delightful interactions and anticipated gatherings where we will meet again. I have been with a very wonderful group of people. We range from 19 to 57, all have different stories life circumstances and yet an amazing bond with one another. I am very proud of everyone and their weight loss. As a group we lost more than 185 pounds. (two people still need to report in!)

And so, now I must call it a day. Tomorrow I will think through how often I am going to continue to blog. I enjoy writing every day and believe there are stores to share even in ordinary day-to-day living. I very much appreciate all of you have followed along and cheered me on. I am touched by how many offered kind words which reminded me daily to press ahead.

I will write tomorrow night when I return home and am reunited with my wonderful family and my chocolate lab pup Dutch. Dutch and I will begin classes this week so that Dutch can be a therapy dog. I am sure that in itself will offer some interesting blogging stories.

Signing off tonight with less on my outside and overflowing heart within…..

She…

discovered that she was the one she’d been waiting for…..celebrate her self-reliance!

And so my two weeks at Fitness North is drawing to a close. It has been a time of adventure, excitement, exhaustion, exhilaration, sorrow, tears, friendships and amazing support. I have learned that I have what it takes to challenge and care for my body, mind and spirit. I have learned about new expectations and new limits, my inner strength and the amazing power of community. I am not a runner (yet) and I still have fitness goals that have not yet been achieved. I have goals and a plan for my weight loss journey and I am returning home on Sunday with a sense of contentment with where I am at. I have worked hard and I am thankful that I don’t have to work out 9 to 10 hours a day at home.

One thing I want to be sure to say….

We were the first ever group at Fitness North. It is inspired by O’Neal’s (from Biggest Loser) weight loss journey. It is not a duplication of what you see on Biggest Loser. I was so touched, day in and day out, but the kindness and compassion offered to us throughout the many hours of exercise. They do not yell like Jillian nor jump on our backs and demand more. O’Neal, Sunshine, Leif, Jay and Sheryl were honest and forthright and did not let us give up. If any of you are looking for an experience that will challenge you, inspire you and call you to live your life in a more healthy and active fashion, let me know and I will connect with you to share how you to can have this opportunity!

And so as I leave this beautiful setting on Lake Superior, where the waterfalls roar and the gentle streams flow, I am assured that God has equipped me with everything I need to continue on. I look forward to the ongoing journey and am grateful for each and every experience and each and every person who have been part of my journey thus far.

Now, I am off to my last chance pool workout to burn the last of the calories before my six am weigh in.

Our bodies are brilliant…

A lot happens in a day at Fitness North, but tonight I am remembering something new I learned about our bodies. Leif was sharing with us that our bodies will continue to lose weight when we get home because we have reset our metabolism during our time here. He also shared that although we are having results, we may not see it right away because our bodies first lose the visceral fat that surrounds our vital organs. After that process, our bodies will burn the fat around our waist lines and other gathering places.

I just am amazed at how God has designed our bodies in all of their functioning. I am pleased that my body knows first what I need, before giving me what I desire. Saturday I will find out my numbers, but just knowing that little tidbit helps me to feel healthier already.

And so at the end of this day, I am thankful that I am (and you are) fearfully and wonderfully made!

a great conversation shared…

Today on the way back to Fitness North, I shared a great conversation with Robin. I enjoy Robin and have great respect for the woman she is. I have heard her passionately share about her desire to be fully alive. Alive for her husband, her children, her friends and family and in her job as a Recreational Therapist. (which was also my degree from Calvin). I have seen Robin struggle in the pit of her soul this week and conquer mountains ~ both physically and emotionally. I know we have not yet known one another for a full two weeks, but I so enjoy who she is and who I am when I am with her.

And so, as we were driving in the van, we began talking about the hope and fear we feel of reaching our goal weight. We believe that Fitness North has a program and a follow-up care plan that WILL see us through and provide us the tools we need to succeed. We began to wonder how life will be different, how we will be different, how others might perceive us differently. We shared honestly and we heard and understood one another…it was a delightful moment between two friends…

It also reminded me of a reading that has often inspired me to reflect…and to remember what is true.

Our Greatest Fear

it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
—Marianne Williamson

It is my desire to be a woman who lets my light shine, giving other people permission to do the same and to be a woman who is liberated from my fear, inviting others to live in that same liberation.

Thank you to you all for journeying with me!

never never never never never….

Give up!

O’Neal has reminded us of this Winston Churchill saying. It can easily be memorized and used in many contexts, but during these two weeks, I have had to repeat it often in my thoughts.

It doesn’t need much explanation and although I could add lots of thoughts, I will keep this blog simple. As you go through difficult things in the next hours, days or weeks, I would encourage you to remember this famous saying AND apply it.

I wonder what will change in your life if you stick with it….lots has changed in mine!

Signing off and moving forward!

When you feel like quitting….

Press on!

Today was a hard day for many of us. We can attribute it to a lot of things, but mostly we have decided to go with whatever is…is! We started working out at five instead of six for our last week and we have two hours of cardio instead of one hour before breakfast, we get back to the townhouse at 7 and are back up for cardio at 8 and our hike was one of the harder ones….alot of ups and downs (steep ones and rocky) so the way in and the way back out felt equally difficult. Those are some of the logical reasons why we may have all had moments today when we felt like quitting…..

But you know what we did, we Pressed On…..we encouraged and rallied and cheered one another through and we are amazingly comfortable allowing one another to experience melt downs as well. It is all part of the journey. It is similar to how life is at home as well…not so much in the 10 hours of exercise or the controlled environment of which we are enjoying, but the ups and downs, the laughter and the tears, the wondering how much longer and the amazing end around the next bend. Life mirrors what we are experiencing in many ways.

I think what strikes me though is that when I am alone in life, quitting is easier to do than when I am in community. I walked alone on the hike for a while and battled in my mind the idea of just standing still. I tried to rationalize stopping as a moment to enjoy the beauty, to spend a moment with God and even just dreading if I keep walking, I will face another hill. I thought thru how it would be kind to myself to stop and head back and yet the truth was that my mind wanted me to believe that my body COULD NOT press on.  I had to choose, very intentionally, to keep walking, one step in front of the other, and press on.

We are pretty honest with each other and admit when our stinkin thinkin takes over and know how to encourage and speak truth to one another…but one thing we have clearly learned, is the importance for each of us to know how to choose to press on…for another 30 seconds, another minute, or another mile…I hope you to can find the courage, energy and sheer determination to do the same!

Heart….

Ask yourself “how long am I going to work to make my dreams come true?” I suggest you answer, “as long as it takes.” (taken from The Human Spirit)

It is this quote I am taking into this next week. I will not have reached my goal weight before I go home, but I will be closer than when I stepped off the plane one week ago. All I know from today’s weigh in is that Leif (our trainer) said he is very pleased with my numbers. That is all I need to know to press on ahead. A great aspect of Fitness North is their follow-up program and I am excited to get home knowing that some foods are not an option but also knowing what foods ARE good options. The staff here at Fitness North will send me home with a meal plan, a goal weight and an exercise plan. I will report my weights in regularly and they will help me adjust my plan when (not if) my body plateau’s. I am grateful for their investment in this aspect of my life. It feels like they understand what it means to make a lifestyle change as opposed to being on a diet. Leif has said often that life is to be lived and enjoyed but some of that freedom of enjoyment comes after you reach your goal weight.  I can live in that reality and feel hopeful!

And so I am in the process of setting realistic goals this week for when I return home next week Sunday. I am focusing on goals that are attainable and am practicing saying “it just isn’t an option…at this time!” I am making a shopping list and asking my Mom to pick up a few things so I have the right things in my home. (Watch for that email Mom!)

Last night O’Neal reminded us that “A vision without a plan is an illusion”. I have carried an illusion around long enough. It is time to transform that illusion to a vision and all that is missing is a plan! Gotta love that!

And so, I will do what it takes, for as long as it takes…to live happy, healthy and well!
