embracing fear…

What do I fear?
I fear stagnation and lack of progress.
I fear never reaching my potential and being average.
I fear being forgotten…the past…yesterday’s news.
I fear giving up and being passed by, going softly into that good night.
I fear letting those I love down, letting myself down.
I fear settling, giving in to the “that’s just the way it is” mindset.
I fear dying without leaving my mark.
I fear not feeling these fears anymore and just floating along.
These fears feed me, they nourish my drive.

I love my fear.

I read this the other day and have to say it has lingered in my thoughts. There is something in it that resonates within me. I am not sure I would end with a statement that I love my fear….

But as I have thought it through:

I am considering my fears and being curious about what they are rooted in.

I am considering where at times fear holds me back.

I am making intentional decisions to push into fear more often and find it to be a very growing experience.

I don’t believe it is realistic to rid our lives of fear, but I do hope that my fears keep changing ~ because that will indicate I am moving….and that is truly living!

  1. I think it takes bravery and guts to push into your fear and find out what it’s rooted in and something tells me that you’re a gutsy woman. I can’t say I’ve ever thought that my fears needing pushing into until I read this. Thanks for this post – I love being invited to curiosity about new things. (o:

  2. I love this quote, and it is my background. I was curious as to whom it was attributable, googled it, and happened upon it, here. I view this quote from an athletic perspective: I am always striving to better myself, even though we fear greatness and the pain that it takes to achieve greatness. That is why the great are few — so many lack the ambition. The way the quote speaks of fearing stagnation and normalcy is moving, and helps to show that, when caught up in all the hard work, there is an end goal: to be great, and to leave a mark in the world.
